The 2003 UEFA Cup Final was played on 21 May 2003 between Celtic of Scotland and FC Porto of Portugal. FC Porto won the match 3–2 in extra time thanks to a goal from Derlei. This was also the first game to use the silver goal rule, although it did not affect the outcome of the game as Porto scored in the second half of extra time, thus meaning the game had to be played until the end of extra time.
Here FC Porto's lead did not last long after the restart as Celtic equalised when Henrik Larsson met Didier Agathe's cross to send a looping header in over the helpless Vítor Baía to get his tenth goal of the tournament and his 200th Celtic goal. However, within 5 minutes, it was 2–1 when Deco's through ball found Dmitri Alenichev who converted the cross. Three minutes later, Celtic equalised once again through Henrik Larsson when he headed in Alan Thompson's corner. After this the game stagnated until a couple of minutes from time when Jackie McNamara's errant pass found Dmitri Alenichev, however he shot it over the net.
Normal time ended with the game at 2–2, and extra time saw cagey football from both sides. Celtic were down to ten men when Bobo Balde was dismissed in the 96th minute after collecting his second yellow card. However, they could not hold for long, as in the 112th minute Derlei reacted quickest to a Robert Douglas block and rounded McNamara to make it 3–2. Porto managed to hang on even after having Nuno Valente sent off, thus ensuring that Porto had ended their 16 year wait for European glory.

The making of the Club
FC Porto's first official trophy, the Union of the North Cup, was won in 1911.
In the following years, it became one of the biggest clubs in Portugal and went on to win the first national competition in the history of Portuguese football, the Campeonato da Liga 1934-35.
Porto were always a struggling team after that championship, and went on to win only five championships in 41 years.
But slightly before the new president Pinto da Costa took office, the history of Portuguese soccer saw a new title contestant, and a new European team.
In the following years, Porto won 18 titles, 10 Portuguese cups, 15 Portuguese supercups, 1 European Champions Cup, and the new Champions League, 1 UEFA Cup, 1 European Super Cup, and 2 Intercontinental Cup.

Pinto da Costa
Two of the biggest reasons for this change of fortunes were Pinto da Costa, who took control of Porto in 1982 and José Maria Pedroto whom he had brought back with him to manage the team. The duo quickly caused the team damage, with Pinto da Costa as football director and Pedroto as manager, winning two titles previously, and making controversial remarks about the centralization of Portuguese football, which caused them problems with the directing board, and consequently they left.
After quitting, in 1982, Pinto da Costa ran for presidency and won, bringing back Pedroto. The following decades turned what was the third team in the overall history of Portuguese football into the biggest title winner of the past 30 years. Since 1982, Porto has won 17 titles, achieving the record Penta (five leagues in a row) in 1999 and since 1976 never finished below 3rd place, 11 Portuguese cups, and has a majority of Supercups, having won 15 out of a possible 30.

Jeneral Descriptions
FC Porto was founded in the northern city of Porto on 28 September 1893 by wine-salesman António Nicolau de Almeida, who had his first contact with the game of football on one of his trips to England. The club was revived in 1906 by Monteiro da Costa.
Commercially, the club has several stores called Loja Azul (Blue Store) scattered around the city, including two used with official supplier Nike. Since 1994, a merchandising goods fair called Portomania is organized during the pre-season. FC Porto publishes one of the older club-related publications in Europe: a monthly 60-page full-colour magazine called Dragões (Dragons) that has existed since the early 1980s.
FC Porto played in the Portuguese championship 74 times, playing 2048 games, winning 1333, drawing 375, losing 340, scoring 4542 goals, and conceding 1909, having 3342 points as of the end of the 2007–08 season. They were also one of the founding members of the now disbanded G-14.

Porto 0 Chelsea 1: Clinical Nicolas Anelka adds a gloss finish to a dull night in Portugal
Nicolas Anelka is developing a talismanic quality for Chelsea in Europe after scoring the winning goal for the third time in five Champions League games.
Anelka dived to head home Florent Malouda’s left-wing cross, 21 minutes from the end of a mundane and largely uneventful game on northern Portugal’s wet and windy Atlantic coast.
With it, he secured Chelsea top spot in Group D but, perhaps more importantly, with a Barclays Premier League clash against Arsenal coming up on Sunday, ensured Carlo Ancelotti’s team did not lose their impressive momentum in a game which ultimately mattered little.
This was an economical performance for the Premier League leaders, the sort which used to make Jose Mourinho glow with pride. There was none of the stylish football which has lit up much of Ancelotti’s first few months at the club but it is a notable result against a Porto team unbeaten at home since Manchester United’s win in the Estadio Dragao last season.
Deco continued to misfire spectacularly. Lining up an inswinging free-kick from the Chelsea left, he sliced it horribly towards his own goal and sparked a Porto counter attack, which ended with Cech gathering a centre at his near post from Raul Meireles.
Ancelotti threw up his arms in despair but soon the Chelsea manager was celebrating.
Anelka applied a finish to more excellent play from Malouda for his sixth goal of the season. His goals have won two games against Porto and one away to APOEL Nicosia.

Jorge Nuno Pinto da Costa
Jorge Nuno de Lima Pinto da Costa is the current President of Portuguese sports club F.C. Porto.
Pinto da Costa is a charismatic leader of FC Porto and a polarizing figure in Portuguese football. He is hugely popular among the followers of F.C. Porto, which he led to become one of the top European clubs. His long stint as leader of FC Porto, and his deep knowledge of the inner works of Portuguese football earned him the nickname of the Pope (o Papa).
Domestic success continued to be a hallmark of FC Porto in subsequent years, and 1995-1999 became the highest note of Portuguese domestic competition ever. Following titles by Bobby Robson (1995 and 1996) and António Oliveira (1997 and 1998), Fernando Santos captured a record-setting 5th consecutive title in 1999. Porto later achieved 2nd place in the championship but won the 2000 and 2001 Portuguese Cups (whilst reaching the European Quarterfinals in both seasons) only to replace Fernando Santos with Octávio Machado. Octávio however only had a short stint at Porto. His replacement would be José Mourinho.
